HEA Problem--Rebecca York

I have an interesting problem. My hero is a vampire. And now I'm at the end of the book trying to figure out what kind of ending I can get away with. Do I have to turn the heroine into a vampire so she can live forever? Or can I get away with their staying together and seeing what happens?

I guess this is why I've never had the urge to write a vampire. :)
My 'shapeshifter' (not Intrigue) is under a curse and the curse is lifted at the end of the book so he can live a normal life.

Is yours an Intrigue? Hmmm. I might try going with him vowing to live as a human (as much as he possibly can).

Can you give him a soul a'la Angel? That may be a terrible idea.

I never thought of him as not having a soul. Yes, he can live as a human as much as he can. But what's going to happen when she starts to age? They may have to agree that she has to become a vampire.

I think having her become a vampire is cliché (Remember the campy movie LOVE AT FIRST BITE?) I'd rather see him sacrifice his immortality to be with her for whatever time they have. I'm sure you could come up with a way that he "converts" but at a price, not just his immortality and agelessness.

I love what Cheryl said, sacrificing his immortality to be with her. One of the most touching scenes I've seen in movies (okay 2), were the scene in the original Highlander where he was with his true love when she died of old age. They did the same thing in reverse in Cyborg 2, with Elias Koteas and Angelina Jolie. Great love story there! And great suspense. She's a cyborg and a bomb! Really!
At the end of it she's holding him and he's an old man.

All that to say that this could be the HEA but you don't go there. You just end with him vowing to devote his life to her and end his nefarious ways :) Hell, maybe she can go to work at a blood bank (haha)

In vampire lit, both endings are used routinely: it's an either/or sort of thing, has to be one or the other. They stay exactly as they are or one converts to the other side.

Because I think vampires have a broad appeal as ultimate "bad boys," renegades, untamed, and challenging, I prefer the vampire hero to remain a vampire. If he becomes mortal, he is less mysterious and dark.

All that angst disappears...

Leave the guy his chops. That'd be my preference.

Jacki and Cheryl, thanks so much for the input!

It's great to hear from a vampire fan, since this is only my second foray into the genre.
